Mahalo to Robert “Bobby” Akoi our Choir leader and Ipolani Thompson and May Au, pianist. Out winnings of $500 were set in place for the 50th. Ahupua‘a O Kahana: Back from Convention brought our members full force to support residents being evicted from Kahana in October 2008. District Legislators were directly involved with six families and may supporters throughout the Islands. Legislation was crafted to remedy the situation with H.B. 1552 CD1, passing through the sessions. Governor Lingle had the bill on her veto list; however, legislators had a special session to override her vet. Today, a Kahana Planning Council is being established with (3) KHCC members, Ululani, May and Jolene to craft a master plan for the State Park with another member from DLNR and on member from the public. Others will be non-voting members or ex-officio members nominated by Senator Hee and Rep. Wooley. Christmas Paina: Our members celebrated the Holidays with a wonderful dinner at the Tropic ‘āina Restaurant in Punalu‘u on December 18th, 2008 with ninety members present. Sista, Manu Kapu, Puanani Martinez & Ben Shafer took charge for all the food. Michele Kalili and May Au displayed our arts and crafts and classy silent auction. Our Choir also entertained all. Our grab bag gifts were handled by Tessie our Treasurer and her Santa helpers. What a wonderful evening with Leimomi Khan, our AOHCC President. Ka‘a‘awa: The new year 2009, KHCC’s first meeting on January 15th called for the support to keep Ka‘a‘awa school open as it has the maximum capacity and educational programs in place. Motion to write letter to Patricia Hamamoto to testify in support. Member Creighton Ualani Mattoon is a member of the Planning Council. AOHCC Board Meetings nod O‘ahu Council Meetings: Ko‘olauloa HCC attended January 10th, April 11th, and July 11th, 2009 meetings with KHCC hosting the breakfast and Hawaiian plate lunch. KHCC will attend the next meeting in October. KHCC also attended the Oahu Council meetings held January 24th, April 25th, 2009 was in Kahana with KHCC hosting the breakfast and lunch. KHCC attended the July 25th, 2009 meeting. Also plan for September 12th & October 15th on Resolutions. ‘A‘ohe hana nui ke alu ‘ia!!! Ali‘i Sundays: Ko‘olauloa HCC members attended Ali’i Sunday on January 25th to honor King Charles Lunalilo at Kawaiahao Church and our ho‘okupu of tropical Puas. We also were in attendance on March 22nd, to commemorate Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole. On June 7th 2009, Ululani and Kawika attended in honor of Kamehameha I. August 30th, 2009, was attended by Michele Kalili. Kai Kekona and Rebekah Luke to commemorate Queen Lili‘uokalani. Mauna‘ala Cleanup: KHCC cleaned on December 2008 and March 2009 teaming up with Ali’i Pauahi Hawaiian Civic Club. Hana Noeau Workshops: KHCC’s first workshop was on January 31st at the Kahana Valley Orientation Center and many more to follow. We continued to work on hula implements and lomi la‘au. Other workshops were scheduled for our anniversary. Honolulu HCC at Waimea Falls: On February 15th, KHCC members attended to 90th Anniversary of Honolulu HCC and enjoyed the program and the tour. Native Hawaiian Health Fair/Ho‘ike‘ike: It’s always a fun time for our members as we work real hard to put out the best Hawaiian Plate for our annual Scholarship Fund at the NH Health Fair/Ho‘ike‘ike on March 8th 2009 at the Bishop Museum. This year we were able to provide six scholarships to our native Hawaiian recipients, Alan Akoi, Keilani Akoi, Heitiare Kammerer, Uilani Pualoa, Kelsey Villamu, and Keaka Wallace. Go get educated, it’s all good. Hawaiian Caucus: KHCC had their own table of their arts and crafts and all history books on display on March 19, 2009 at the State Capitol. Ululani and Sista, May worked with our Na Opio participating in the Taro Festivals as well. We partnered with the Kahana Community Association and their art work as well for all legislators and visitors. Step Up Walk for Diabetes: On March 21, 2009 KHCC members and na ‘opio walked around Kapiolani Park and raised $750 plus to help fight diabetes. Kūhiō Day Parade/Moonlight Concert: On March 28, 2009, KHCC entry this year included Pelekikena Ululani with her officers Tessie, Treasurer and Jolene, Secretary as our two VP’s handled our luau stew bowl at the kanikapila at Kapiolani Park. We also had cold, fresh island coconut drinks on the menu, Hawaiian style!! Ho‘okupu Aloha Fundraiser: On April 25th, 2009, Michele, May and Sherri Lynn set up the arts and crafts booth at Kualoa Ranch. In Kahana, the arts and crafts workshop made eight papa ku‘ai/poi boards. O‘ahu Council members observed. Relay for Life: On May 22nd 2009, KHCC had many members participating in the relay for life in remembrance of all Cancer recipients and survivors at the Hau‘ula Playground. Much was donated by our members for the cause. Ko‘olauloa HCC 85th Anniversary: On June 14th, 209, KHCC held a “Brunch” at the Turtle Bay Resort in Kahuku. O‘ahu with 430 in attendance. We are so grateful for the 17 member clubs that attended in support and our families and friends. The menu was awesome, our six honorees were Amy Kamaka‘ala from Ka‘a‘awa, Adella Johnson from Kahana, Agnes Choy from Punalu‘u (deceased), Dannette Kaliko Leota-Pascual from Hau‘ula, Gladys Pualoa-Ahuna from Laie and Beatrice Kamaile Danuser from Kahuku. Also recognized was Lea Alberts from Sunset and Superintendent of the Windward District in support of Hawaiian language in our moku. Every honoree fulfilled the goals and objective of the by-laws of the Ko‘olauloa HCC. Our silent auction was prepared by Michele Kalili & May Au. Helpers were Kai, Pete Krape and Rebekah Luke. Makana Makamae was KHCC’s raffle by Margaret Primacio and Bobby Akoi, Kela Miller on the best entertainment. Overall Chair was Ululani with Sista Leota Pascual. Much Mahalo to Heitiare Kammerer for the programs and decorations by Pualoke and members with the write-ups done for awards from donors as Abigail Kawananakoa Much Mahalo to all our KHCC club members. KHCC paid special tribute to King Kamehameha I, Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalaniana‘ole and our founder William Kanakanui. Kaliuwa‘a/Sacred Falls: It has been ten years since the closure of Kaliuwa‘a and KHCC again requested visitation to the site from DLNR to practice our traditional customary rights as cultural practitioners in the Ko‘olauloa moku. On July 18th, 1009, members of the Ko‘olauloa HCC gathered together at 8:00 a.m. to hike to the trailhead to streambeds of ‘opala. Out Hawaiian plate was prepared by Sista Leota-Pascual’s 1ohana as we prayed for healing and peace for our wahi pana. DLNR has yet to allow passage to the falls of Kaliuwa‘a. This 2009, KHCC will submit a reso for support. Kiho‘alu Slack Key Concert: August 15th, 2009 KHCC fundraised with our Hawaiian Plate of Kalua pua‘a or Laulau or combination. Slack key out, Mahalo Milton. Mokapu ‘Iwi: Cathleen Mattoon has reported back to the membership on all issues pertaining to the reinternment of the Mokapu ‘iwi. All construction of new homes have had ‘iwi surfaced an all parties have been notified. All construction activities in the Ko‘olauloa moku are also reported to the members including surveying. Punalu‘u North Bridge is scheduled to be replaced and also Kahana North Bridge. Many of our members and their families will be affected. |
