Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club 2012
by Matthew Erickson
It has been a fulfilling year that saw its spurts in activity.
Our annual holiday gathering to honor and thank the residents of Hale Maha'olu 'Eono was rescheduled as a Valentine Social. Our awesome members, spearheaded by Lana Vierra & Keri Kalilikane, a spaghetti supper was served and we spent the evening playing bingo. Fun was had by all!
Attention immediately shifted into Maui Kamehameha Day celebrations, parade and ho'olaule'a.Vice President Daryl Fujiwara was appointed Maui commissioner to the State Kamehameha Day Commission and served as overall event coordinator. The parade saw an increase in partici- pants and was even able to humbly welcome back the Royal Order of Kamehameha and Hale O Na Ali'i o Hawai'i to the parade! It was reported that over 5,000 spectators in the parade. The day continued with live Hawaiian music, halau hula performances and a host of food, art & crafter vendors. Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club members assisted Fujiwara with staffing, planning and implementation.
Aunty Leimomi Khan soon visited Maui and trained several of the LHCC members to register voters as part of the “No Vote, No Grumble” initia- tive. We were trained at the annual Ki Ho'alu Festival at the Maui Arts and Culture. There we assisted with exposing the voters’ registration initia- tive to over 3,000 attendees and briskly registered over 75 voters. Members quickly reaching out to possible venues and registered an additional 35 voters. Since the Primary Election though, we haven’t been as vocal for various reasons.
Quickly becoming the premiere Maui open volleyball tournament, the “No Ka 'Oi Volleyball Tournament”, Lahaina Hawaiian Civic Club was provided the opportunity to operate food & beverage concessions. Besides fundraising through the weekend, we were able to take in some amaz- ing volleyball skills from across the state.
We now are concurrently planning our group’s attendance to convention and performing our very own election upon our return.
Mahalo Mainland Council for what we are certain will be a stellar annual convention!
