The Hawaiian Civic Club of Waimanalo had 3 delegates at the 48th Convention in Anchorage Alaska. Pelekikena Marvelle Ku`ulei Laughlin, Pu`uku, Ku`ulei Aila and member Marian Carson-Heydon. We were able to learn much from the Alaska Native community about their culture and their way of life.
In January 2008 we had a formal election of officers and started the New Year off to an excellent start. Enrolled 5 members into the Micro-Enterprise Development Program and all five members graduated on March 15, 2008. Donated 2 hand quilt pillows for the 2008 Cancer relay at the Waimanalo Park. February finds members planning for the Native Hawaiian Health festival held on 3/9/2008 at the Bishop Museum. On 12th of February some members attended the Iolani Palace for the re-enactment of Kalakaoa and KapiolaniÕs coronation. The HCCW is now a sponsor and advocate for the Hui Mālama I Ke Kai Foundation. The program is a unique afterschool program servicing approximately 40 primarily Native Hawaiian, 5th and 6th graders attending Blanche Pope and Waimanalo Elementary Schools. The uniqueness of the program stems from its foundation in Native Hawaiian Culture and values. It is based around an ocean/environmental theme as well as its deep connection to the community of Waimanalo. As a sponsor, water, snacks and sandwiches, are provided when this youth group works in the Lo‘i at the Ulupo Heiau after school.
In March our Aha Mele group that meets every Thursdays went to see Aunty Genoa Keawe at the Marriott Hotel in Waikiki for her 89th birthday. It was a very special night for all that attended. Aha Mele director Sherry Kaku shared the stage with aunty Genoa for the last time.
Members went to Ulupo Heiau for the monthly clean up on 3/8/2008. April 2008- A visit to the Waimea Valley for the Oahu Council meetings is enjoyed by a free tour thru the gardens. May 2008, attended the Mahalo Dinner for the Kau Inoa registrars/grantees and recipient of Kau Inoa sponsorship funding over the past four years. Members attended and enjoyed a great dinner at the Pearl Country Club. The HCCW by-laws and constitution were updated and corrected at the May 2008 general meeting, Chair Ku‘ulei Aila and her committee did an excellent job with the corrections and updates, a donation was sent to the Waimanalo Gym given by Kumu Tammy Kepo‘o free of charge. July 2008 finds members wearing their Ocean blue and Sand beige T-shirts at the membership drive at the information booth. On 8/23/2008 members spent the day cleaning and talking story with Bill Mai‘oho at Mauna‘ala. Many thanks to Clifford and Terry Loo who keeps everyone on schedule and supplies water and donuts for all that helped to clean the Royal Mausoleum.
