Kuakini Hawaiian Civic Club of Kona 2012
by Shane Nelsen
We started off the year with an awesome celebration and tribute to Prince Kuhio. We continue our efforts to collaborate with community stakeholders to educate and bring awareness of Prince Kuhio and what he advocated for. Our club is very passionate when it comes to education scholarship awards. Fundraisers were held and a dinner celebration to honor the recipients took place in July. One of the criteria is the agreement to complete 20 hours of civic work. Kuakini has advocated education and health, and we worked in the community to participate with Dr. Carole Titcomb in her project to collect data and recordings of traditional methods of child rearing. Our ‘Opio group took off this year, and we are excited with our new expansion of youth in our club. We mahalo the Mainland Council for hosting this year’s convention in Washington, D.C.
