The re-enactment titled Ka Lei Maile Ali‘i: The Queen’s Women

The club’s hallmark production has been, and continues to be, the drama titled Ka Lei Maile Ali‘i: The Queen’s Women. As noted in the past, this is a re-enactment of a gathering at the Salvation Army Hall in Hilo in 1897, taken from an article in the San Francisco Call newspaper. The drama recounts the support of Hawaiian nationals, in particular Mrs. Emma Aima Nawahi and Mrs. Abigail Kuaihelani Campbell of Hui Aloha ‘āina O Na Wahine, for Queen and country in the gathering of signatures for the Ku‘e Petition as a show of resistance to annexation of Hawaii to the U.S.

The club performed the re-enacaatment several times this year, but we were honored to remember our Queen Liliuokalani on her birthday, Sept. 2, at the Kana‘ina Building on ‘Iolani Palace grounds.
